Biography

Born in 1966, Ronnie Herd, a native of Inverness, began his life in the theatre at the young age of 5 but a singing engagement in Brittens’ “Noah's Flood” with Scottish Opera at age twelve firmly planted the foundations of a lifelong interest in performing. As a teenager, involvement in various Edinburgh Festival and Fringe productions, both on and off stage paved the way for a lasting full time involvement in technical and backstage work.

Ronnie is currently employed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as Stage Manager and Tour Manager. Prior to his work in Scotland he was employed from 1991-2005 by the Staatstheater of Nuernberg in Germany, as a Theatre Technician, rising in 2000 to the position of Deputy Chief Theatre Technician. In addition to his duties with the Staatstheater, he has been involved in many independent theatre productions and festivals. Highlights include: the Asian Premier of Phillip Glass’ “Fall of The House of Usher” at the 2003 Singapore Arts Festival, production and technical management of the 2002 and 2003 Dorset Opera seasons, an open-air production of Mozart’s “Entfuehrung aus der Serail” for the 2000 Opera and Cultural Festival in Cyprus, and extensive production work in conjunction with one of Germany's premier touring theatre venues “The Tafelhalle”.

In addition to his work behind the scenes, Ronnie has been active in front of the curtain as well. Since 1994 he has been the lead singer of The Hillman’s Blues Band performing throughout Europe, most recently in 2003 embarking on their third British Tour culminating in a highly acclaimed performance at the Borders Jazz and Blues Festival. As a natural development of his work with the Hillman’s Blues Band he began to experiment with Jazz formats as the lead singer of The Piaphonics Combo, their work together included performances at the Blues Will Eat Festival in 2002 and “Der Blaue Nacht” in 2001. The “Blue Night” performance led to an offer to ground and front The Opera All-Star Band which has brought together Opera singers from around the globe with professional musicians from Bavaria to create a new slant on old tunes.
